Thank you Carol for naming the root of the problem. Food is a drug and needs to be thought of like a drug. A drug that we can not live without. You can live without alcohol or cocaine but you would whither away without food.

Thanks for your comment, Shirl. And the good news is - it's not too late! You can learn to manage feelings without food. It's just a skill that can be learned like any other skill. It may take you out of your comfort zone at first, but it's worth it to break the addiction. So doable . . . it's just that many people are afraid to try, so they keep blaming stress or other people, or the food itself. You have already taken the first step by recognizing the problem. Kudos!

Hi, I would like to say that the above article sums it all up for me. I have been trying to tell my friend the very same thing for years but she wont have it. I know I am anesthetising my self by eating cookies (or biscuits as we call them in the uk), cake, chocolate, sweets, crisps, chips, ice cream etc. I have been doing this for years and years and I am now in my 50s. I know I have been using food as a drug. There is no two ways about that, in fact the drug aspect of food as become more important than eating because I am truly physically hungry. Its true what you say though, how on earth do I face my negative feelings without turning to food, how do I accept what I don't want to accept without eating ice cream and chocolate bars etc.

Its a great article. I am going to have a closer look at your website when I have got a bit more time. I need help and I need it now!! Thanks
